Lai Chien-hsin, Director General of Water Resources Agency, Ministry of Economic Affairs headed to Hsinchu City with Deputy Commissioner of the United States Bureau of Reclamation, David Palumbo on October 23. In addition to sharing the highlights of the transformed waterfront, Mayor Lin Chih-chien also turned into a local guide to lead Director General Lai Chien-hsin and experts from the United States Bureau of Reclamation to ride bicycles and appreciate the amazing sea view at Fish Scales Stairs. Hsinchu City has received nearly NT$300 million for the third phase of the water environment in Forward-looking Infrastructure Development Program. Therefore, Mayor Lin expressed his gratitude to the Water Resources Agency for its support. He said that he will continue to improve the left bank of Hsinchu, the Hsinchu Fisherman's Wharf and the 17 kilometer coast to create a Smiling Waterfront.
“The change of Gangnan Canal Park is impressive!” Gangnan Canal Park has remained unused for a long period of time and is reopen in June this year. In addition to the water-friendly platform and pushbike experience area, kayaking is taken place there. Director General of Water Resources Agency and experts from the United States Bureau of Reclamation were impressed by the results of the transformation.
Mayor Lin shared that since the launch of the Executive Yuan's Forward-looking Infrastructure Development Program, the team has worked hard to bring "water" back to the city. Now, citizens can embrace and get close to water. The surrounding water areas can be linked with people’s life. Moreover, citizens can enjoy the Smiling Waterfront of the river, sea and port by riding a bicycle.
Mayor Lin said that the government invested more than NT$ 2.5 billion to build the Smiling Waterfront after taking office. The environment is beautified by integrating sightseeing and natural resources. Take the 17 kilometer coastline as an example, the Hsinchu Fishing Port, Gangnan Canal Park, Nangang Bird Watching Area, Crab Trail and Xiangshan Wetland are connected to create an environment dancing to the tune of the nature. In addition, Hsinchu City has received NT$ 800 million findings from the central government for the third phase of the water environment in Forward-looking Infrastructure Development Program, which will be used in improving the Smiling Waterfront, including improving water quality of the Gangnan Canal, reinforcing bridges along the 17km coast and beautifying landscape of the waterfront corridor on the left bank.
