In September, Sanmin Elementary School-Affiliated Nursery will see its first students begin class following rebuilding. The legendary “art museum style” has left parents full of expectation. Mayor Lin Chih-Chien made an inspection visit prior to the new nursery’s opening and showed the building’s interior decoration, 4.5 meter raised ceiling activity area, track lighting and ceiling to floor windows on Facebook; the children can also slide to the first floor on the two level slide on the outer wall. The building is like an art museum. Mayor Lin said that the building itself will give the children an experience of beauty and that is a good place from which to start aesthetic education.
Sanmin Elementary School-Affiliated Nursery was designed by architect Lin Bo-yang. World-renowned Japanese architect Takaharu Tezuka, who designed Tokyo Fuji Kindergarten, also visited in person and offered design suggestions. The building has a grey terrazzo base and a gentle curved exterior and is one of the few school buildings in Taiwan with a Japanese minimalist design.
The most distinctive feature of the buildings is that, unlike traditional square classroom design, it has a 4.5 meter raised ceiling, giving a wide view in the area between the classrooms and not limiting the children to the small classrooms. The wide indoor space is coupled with natural light and track lightning and curved walls have replaced traditional pillars and beams, giving the feeling of being in an art museum and achieving a major breakthrough in nursery building design.
Sanmin Elementary School-Affiliated Nursery began construction in May 2019. The city government has spent NT$75 million on constructing a new school building, doubling enrollment capacity from 90 children in three classes to 180 in six classes. The new students will start attending in September following completion of the new building at the end of August.
