Hsinchu Du Cheng Huang Temple (City God Temple) is going to hold the Cheng Hunag's 269th Anniversary on Jan. 15 (Nov. 29 of lunar calendar). The rehearsal of the event was held yesterday (Jan. 14). Hsinchu City Mayor Lin Chih-chien went to the temple with Hsinchu City Government Group to worship Cheng Huang (the City God), and Mayor Lin made a wish that the country will be prosperous and the people will be at peace.
Mayor Lin states that Hsinchu Du Cheng Huang Temple is the largest Cheng Huang Temple in Taiwan, and it also has the highest rank. The belief of Cheng Huang and the Cheng Huang Pilgrimage activity inherit the traditions from the ancients, and they are also the important cultural features in Hsinchu area. The annual event "Hsinchu Zhongyuan Cheng Huang Festival" inherits the 100 years of the traditional religious culture. The public can have a deeper understanding about religious history, and the festival also becomes one of the cultural brands in Hsinchu City.
Nov. 29 (lunar calendar) is Cheng Huang's birthday. The anniversary event begins at the night of Nov. 28 and lasts until Nov. 29. The followers will go to the temple to worship Cheng Huang. There will be many folklore shows around the temple.
Zheng Genya, the chief of Hsinchu Du Cheng Huang Temple, has been promoting traditional culture such as Chinese orchestra and Beiguan music. Additionally, he always holds musical exchange event which attracts many young people to join Chinese orchestra.
Mayor Lin points out that Hsinchu Du Cheng Huang Temple has been dedicating in social welfare such as providing poverty assistance, emergency allowances, funeral affairs subsidy, tuition and fees, poverty scholarship, and free rice. Mayor Lin appreciates the manager and members from Hsinchu Du Cheng Huang Temple and its followers for their effort toward the society.
