Chinese New Year is close! In order to ensure the food safety for the public during the New Year vacation, Hsinchu City Public Health Bureau (HCCHB) enabled New Year Food Inspection a few days ago. The inspection includes environmental health check and food safety. Environmental health is targeting traditional markets, vendors, supermarkets, grocery stores, New Year markets, New Year dishes, online shopping food producers, and food logistic businesses. Food safety tests random batch of fresh produce, fruits, online New Year dishes, hotpot protein slices, Chinese mushrooms, etc. Inspection result will be shown in HCCHB website (http://dep.hcchb.gov.tw/).

The inspection also propagates food safety and counsels business owners to properly label, store, and transfer all food products. A product that involves with exaggeration, medical efficacy labels or advertisements will be asked to remove from the shelves to avoid misleading the public and ensure consumer rights.

Deputy Commissioner of HCCHB Yang Qingmei reminds consumers to remember the 5 "not to buys" while shopping for New Year groceries. First, do not buy product that isn't labeled properly. Second, do not buy produce that its color is too vivid. Third, do not buy products with weird smell. Fourth, do not buy product that doesn't indicate its source. Fifth, do not buy product that its sealed package is broken.

HCCHB suggests food business owners to ensure their own product quality and food sanitation, and follow the Act Governing Food Safety and Sanitation. HCCHB also reminds the public to only shop for what is needed during the New Year shopping, pay attention to food storing, and do not hoard food. For any food sanitation and safety inquiries, please call the public service line: 1999; or HCCHB Food and Drug Division: 5353170.
