The Voice of Hakka "National Hakka Songs Competition" Debuts on this Weekend

The "National Hakka Songs Competition" held by Hsinchu City Government and Hsinchu Hakka Cultural Association will debut on Nov. 18 and 19 at the plaza in front of Jhulian Temple. The theme of the year is "I Sing the Best Hill Songs," which well represents the nature of Hakka people that love singing hill songs. The competition attracts more than 300 contestants. The public is welcome to enjoy the live singing competition during the weekend.


Hsinchu City Cultural Affairs Bureau point out "National Hakka Songs Competition" has been run for more than 20 years. More than 300 contestants applied for the competition this year, some of them even come a long way from Taitung to join the competition. The oldest contestant "Baisui Bo" Wang Wenbin states he herd cows in the mountain when he was young and developed his lifelong habit of singing hill songs. The youngest contestant Zhong Xinlan is only 4 years old; she wants to be like her older sister who sang on the stage in the previous Hakka singing competition.
 
Hsinchu Hakka Cultural Association states the Hakka tradition of singing hill songs is not only a long lasting tradition, new elements are also being added in recent years. The competition this year has "Longevity," "Pingban," "Male/Female duets," "Shangezi," and "Children" groups and the group finals will be held in the afternoon on Nov. 19.
 
In addition, “Hsinchu City Elementary Hakka Nursery Rhymes Competition” will debut on Nov. 25 at Hsinchu City Government Auditorium. There are more than 200 students from 12 elementary schools applied for this competition. The competition includes assigned songs and optional songs. Little contestants will also dress in Hakka style and perform with facial expressions to make the competition livelier.
