Ansuring the Public's Health; "Hsinchu City Self-Government Ordinance for Electronic Cigarette" Officially Put into Practice Today

In order to protect the health of young people and prevent the harm caused by e-cigarettes, Hsinchu City Government had officially implemented "Hsinchu City Ordinance for Electronic Cigarette" on Nov. 15. Inhaling and carrying a lit e-cigarette are forbid in smoke-free zone. The City Government will be reinforcing propaganda and inspection on this matter. The City Government also suggests the public to follow the relevant regulations and build a smoke-free environment together.
 
Acting Director-general of Hsinchu City Public Health Bureau Yang Qingmei states Hsinchu City Mayor Lin Chih-chien takes the e-cigarette problem very seriously, and establishes "Hsinchu City Ordinance for Electronic Cigarette" ahead of the nation. Qingmei appreciates the supports from the City Assembly. The Public Health Bureau will cooperate with Police Bureau and Education Department in the future to stop the harm caused by electronic cigarettes.

"Hsinchu City Ordinance for Electronic Cigarette" enforces the specifications about people under 18 years old are forbid to use or possess an electronic cigarette; violators should receive smoking cessation education. No one is allowed to provide electronic cigarette to people under 18 years old; violators can be charged a maximum of $50,000 fine. Smoke-free zones also forbid inhale or bring a lit electronic cigarette; violators can be charged a maximum of $10,000 fine.


Hsinchu Public Health Bureau reminds the public that World Health Organization had pointed out no evidence proves electronic cigarettes are helpful in regard of smoking cessation. Additionally, based on the national Food and Drug Administration's research, the result shows almost 80% of the electronic cigarettes contain nicotine which is highly addictive, and the harm that e-cigarettes can cause is no less than actual cigarettes. Electronic cigarettes also contain carcinogens and are more likely to cause stroke and cardiovascular diseases than paper-rolled cigarettes. Moreover, e-cigarettes have the risk of being explode. In order to protect non-smokers, the Public Health Bureau encourages the public to say no to smoking. For relevant inquiries, please call 1999, the public service line.
