The Hsinchu City government is committed to promoting sustainable development. Mayor Kao Hung-An and President Kao Wei-Yuan of National Tsing Hua University signed an MOU on “Local Practices of Sustainable Development.” The Bureau of Environmental Protection stated that during the meeting, Mayor Kao presented a cooperation plaque made of recycled materials, symbolizing the vision of environmental sustainability and establishing a bridge for communication between the two parties. The MOU aims to strengthen knowledge education and resource integration for sustainable development and to jointly promote local sustainable development and climate change adaptation, balancing economic development with environmental protection, to create a happy, friendly, and livable sustainable Hsinchu City.

Mayor Kao stated that the signing of the MOU is the first step in promoting three major areas of cooperation: “education and training, resource inventory and support for USR projects, and the establishment of a sustainable development demonstration site.” In the future, the focus will be on education and training, offering sustainable activities and courses, and providing resources and venues for professional capacity training. In addition, the city government will support NTHU in implementing its University Social Responsibility (USR) project by providing resources and establishing a communication bridge, to achieve SDG4 (quality education) and SDG17 (partnership for the goals), working together towards a technologically advanced and livable Hsinchu.

President Kao of NTHU stated that the UN’s 17 SDGs encompass not only sustainability but also goals and values such as gender equality, ending hunger, and quality education. This aligns with the university’s focus on interdisciplinary education. The university will address complex challenges through various dimensions such as technology, regulations, and humanities. President Kao said, “National Tsing Hua University and the Hsinchu City government have always been able to deliver on their promises. We will continue to cooperate in the future to enhance public awareness and action on sustainability.”
