In line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and in response to March’s Arbor Day, the Hsinchu City government held a tree planting event at the Hsinchu Zoo on Arbor Day. Mayor Kao Hung-An led the children in planting “Griffith’s Ash,” symbolizing hope. She announced the initiation of native plant restoration to create a rich, biodiverse, and sustainable urban forest in downtown Hsinchu.

Mayor Kao stated that planting trees purifies the air, conserves water sources, and helps restore Taiwan’s native flora and fauna. It beautifies the city and allows residents to enjoy nature nearby. Environmental protection and sustainable development have become critical issues for human society. Everyone must take responsibility for improving the environment. The event planted 30 tree seedlings throughout the zoo, aiming not only to restore native plants and animals but also hoping that these saplings will grow into large trees, creating a paradise for rhinoceros beetles. Starting from small areas, the goal is to create a livable and sustainable city for children.

The Department of Economic Development reminded the public that today’s tree-planting event at the zoo marks the beginning of related activities. People can also participate in the “Centennial Celebration + Seedling Distribution” event on the weekends of March 23 and 24 at Eighteen Peaks and the Taiwan endangered species “Oriental White Oak” restoration and promotion event on March 26. In addition to enjoying the flowers in March, people are invited to participate in Arbor Day activities to promote nature conservation.
