Hsinchu City has been awarded the “Excellent” rating in the Ministry of the Environment’s “2023 Water Quality Protection and Soil Remediation Assessment,” marking the 19th consecutive year of receiving this award. Mayor Kao Hung-An expressed gratitude for the Ministry of the Environment's recognition. She attributed this achievement to the dedication of environmental protection colleagues, the Water Environment Patrol Team, and the cooperation of the citizens. She hopes the city government team will continue to promote various sustainable development initiatives, realize a clean, green lifestyle, and encourage energy conservation and carbon reduction, creating a livable and sustainable home.

Mayor Kao emphasized that the city government has permanently attached great importance to environmental protection, and water quality and soil protection are fundamental to creating a high-quality environment. The city’s administrative team has actively promoted water quality protection and soil pollution source tracing investigations. It has installed an automatic water quality monitoring system to monitor changes in water quality, prevent or identify potential sources of agricultural land pollution, and adjust pollution control improvement strategies promptly, creating a better waterfront environment and conserving land resources for the citizens.

Director of the Bureau of Environmental Protection, Chiang Sheng-Jen, stated that the Keya River water area is rich in ecology. With continuous efforts from the city government to strengthen water resource management and various protection measures, the water quality has significantly improved, reviving ecological diversity. Waterbirds that used to inhabit the estuary of Keya River are gradually appearing in the middle and upper reaches of the river, allowing citizens to get closer to nature in their daily lives. In recent years, businesses have implemented self-management measures, tightened the concentration of heavy metal emissions in discharged water, and ensured that overall water quality meets legal standards, demonstrating public-private cooperation in protecting the water environment.

The Bureau of Environmental Protection stated that to create a sustainable environment with high-quality water and soil, it will continue to strengthen pollution prevention and control efforts in water quality and soil, improve execution strategies, conduct regular monitoring and investigations, enhance source pollution control, and implement the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals SDG6 (Environmental Quality) and SDG11 (Sustainable Cities).
