Subsidies for fire prevention devices in old buildings ensure home safety

The Hsinchu City government is promoting the installation of fire escape and evacuation devices in buildings six floors and above. For old buildings, it provides subsidies for updating “3 lights, 2 devices, 1 door” firefighting equipment and subsidies for the first inspection report and fire doors. Mayor Kao Hung-An stated that the city government is implementing fire escape devices for old buildings, and the related subsidy amount is the second-highest nationwide and the highest among non-municipal cities. This initiative aims to improve the safety of old buildings, benefiting all residents in a building with only a single application.

Mayor Kao explained that safeguarding citizens’ lives is the city government’s most important task, and “Sustainable Livability” is one of the ten major strategies of the city government’s administration. The subsidy program for old buildings includes interconnected residential alarms, ensuring that the entire building receives alerts in the event of a fire. This initiative is also an essential criterion for selecting outstanding apartment buildings. It encourages eligible building residents to apply to the city government, collectively enhancing the basic fire safety of old buildings.

The director of the Fire Bureau, Lee Shi-Kung, explained that “3 lights” refer to emergency lighting, evacuation direction indicators, and exit signs. “2 devices” include fire extinguishers and independent residential alarms. According to Article 6 of the Fire Services Act, residents have an obligation to install and maintain fire safety equipment. The subsidy program, launched in 2022, primarily targets old buildings that obtained usage permits before June 27, 1995. Initially, the focus is on providing essential functions such as alarms, fire extinguishing, and evacuation for residents in case of a fire. After inspection and reporting, the program guides and supports the gradual repair of all fire safety equipment.

The Fire Bureau reminds residents that once the application for this program is approved and the installation is completed, no equipment vendors will visit the community to charge fees or claim additional maintenance costs. If there are any doubts, residents can inquire with the Fire Bureau to avoid falling victim to scams.
