The demonstration field of Hsinchu City Food Forest is one year old, and the Food Forest held an anniversary celebration on Nov. 15. Hsinchu City Mayor Lin Chih-chien and the volunteers went to the celebration and harvested sugarcanes together. Mayor Lin states Hsinchu residents has been participating in the food forest design, establishment, planting, and maintenance; it is the "first food forest in Taiwan" that conveys the spirit of "environmental sustainability and sharing foods" to the public and makes Hsinchu City an environmental sustainable city.
The demonstration field of Hsinchu City Food Forest was activated in mid-November last year which was the first food forest demonstration field transformed from a green field on the street corner. The field used environmental-friendly and low carbon as the themes to design its vegetable garden and ecological pond. The conservation volunteers and the locals from Wugong village had planted over 1,000 vegetable, fruit, and herb plants that attracted over 1,000 visitors last year.
Mayor Lin appreciates Wutong Foundation and the conservation volunteer team led by the chief of Wugong village Chen Haifeng for establishing an environmental-friendly measure. Apart from the food forest, Mayor Lin is also actively promoting the plans - "Edible Landscaping Environmental-Friendly Vegetable Garden" and "Community Granary" since he was elected, and the plans receive a lot of positive feedbacks from the public.
The director general of Hsinchu City Environmental Protection Bureau Jiang Shengren states that the helps from the community volunteers and the warmhearted residents are the key of maintaining the demonstration field. The celebration invited people who had been helpful with maintaining the demonstration field to harvest the sugarcanes that were planted one year ago.
Jiang Shengren points out that the food forest is an innovative way of environmental protection which had made achievements such as environmental afforestation, resource recycling, lower carbon, food safety, and environmental education. Apart from tourism purpose, the food forest also obtained the reward of "Urban Planning and Innovative Environmental Establishment" from Ministry of Health and Welfare. Environmental Protection Bureau will keep offering helps and be the public's greatest backup.
